Summers officially underway and what better way to deal with these hot days than hitting some whitewater!
What can I say the water park is just great fun, you have to try it! The community built facility was constructed in 2012 and is located on the Hawea River at Camphill Bridge, the project was the outcome from the loss of recreational amenity resulting from the Clyde Dam, and in particular the drowning of several rapids including the world class Sargood's Weir. Contact Energy promised to give something back to the community, it took 19 years but Hawea Whitewater Park was the result.
The park consist of two waves, the lower wave being the main feature. The flow rate is controlled by the release of water from Lake Hawea, optimum rate is 60 Cumecs, but the waves are still playable at higher/lower rates. You'll see kayaks, bodyboards, rafts, surfboards all sorts on the wave. To check the scheduled release dates see (here) and to see a history of flow rate see (here). The trip down the rest of the Hawea river towards Albert Town and Clutha River is always a great trip taking and hour or so.
Heres a little bit of footage at a flow of 30 cumecs, the bottom wave is so hard to keep hold in!!!
